How to Grow On YouTube By Publishing Less Videos

I’ve asked some of the best creators on YouTube, “How do you write such great titles?”

And they’ve all said the same thing: “I just model what works.”

So this email will show you 5 videos worth modeling to help you write great titles and save time.

Btw, if you want to save more time and use a title generator that uses all the titles ever featured in Creator Hooks, check out Creator Hooks Pro.

The Real Master

professional engineer thumbnail

Title: Professional Engineer versus the FINAL LEVEL of Poly Bridge 3…

Framework: (Authority Figure) versus (Game or Alternative Challenge)…

Hook score: +462

Why this works:

Authority – This game is about building bridges, so how a Professional Engineer plays it is interesting because they do this in real life for a living.

Curiosity – X vs. Y videos like this build curiosity because there’s conflict and you want to know what will happen.

How you can use this framework: Show your audience how a professional in a field compares to a game or something “normal” people do.

Examples of this framework in action:

  • NBA Player versus NBA 2K Champion…
  • Google Engineer versus ChatGPT Coding Challenge

Theory of Constraints

Title: How to Run Fast at a Low Heart Rate

Framework: How to (Achieve Goal) (With Constraint)

Hook score: +470

Why this works:

Desire – This creator’s audience would love to run fast at a low heart rate. Plus, running at a low heart rate (Zone 2, for the running nerds) is a hot trend right now.

Constraint – Running fast is easy, but the constraint of doing it at a low heart rate makes it much more difficult. This increases the desire and the intrigue of this video.

Curiosity – There’s also a bit of counterintuitiveness here because most people would assume if you’re running fast you don’t have a low heart rate.

How you can use this framework: Tell your audience how to achieve a goal with a constraint or with little effort.

Examples of this framework in action:

  • How to Grow On LinkedIn By Publishing Less
  • How to Visit The World’s Most Beautiful Countries For Free

They’re Scamming You

uber driver thumbnail

Title: We Put 7 Uber Drivers in One Room. What We Found Will Shock You.

Framework: We (Tangible Action). What We Found Will Shock You.

Hook score: +609

Why this works:

Negativity – “It’s Illegal” in the thumbnail does a great job at grabbing attention and bringing the drama.

Curiosity – This title opens a loop and makes you wonder what they found.

Credibility – This isn’t just conjecture. Since they actually put 7 Uber drivers in a room it makes this video feel way more believable.

How you can use this framework: Do an experiment with shocking results and show your audience what you discovered.

Examples of this framework in action:

  • We Asked ChatGPT What It Thinks About The Bible. What We Found Will Shock You.
  • 7 People Opened Their TikTok FYP. What We Found Will Shock You.

The Small Details

month you retire thumbnail

Title: The Month You Retire Really Matters

Framework: The (Seemingly Insignificant Detail) You (Activity) Really Matter

Hook score: +672

Why this works:

Curiosity – This is counterintuitive because most people would assume the month you retire doesn’t matter.

How you can use this framework: Make a counterintuitive statement saying something matters more than most people think it does.

Examples of this framework in action:

  • The Month You Buy A Car Really Matters
  • The Time of Day You Work Out Really Matters

Sleepy Time

sleep better tonight thumbnail

Title: 8 Ways for Seniors to Sleep Better Tonight

Framework: 8 Ways for (Specific Audience) to (Solve Specific Problem Quickly)

Hook score: +3541

Why this works:

List – Lists make videos feel more tangible (you know exactly what the video will be about) and they add some curiosity.

Specific Audience – Calling out seniors makes them feel like this video was made for them, so they’re way more likely to click.

Desire – This leverages desire two ways:

  1. Many seniors wish they could sleep better.
  2. “Tonight” adds to the desire because we all want our desires asap.

How you can use this framework: Tell your audience about ways a specific group of people can achieve a goal now.

Examples of this framework in action:

  • 8 Ways for Students to Improve Their Memory In 5 Minutes
  • 8 Ways Senior Golfers can Drive the Ball Farther Today

Flop of the Week

chicago thumbnail

Title: Chicago Just Guaranteed Vacation Days for Everyone

Hook score: -96

Why this flopped: This title is too narrow. If you don’t live in Chicago, you probably don’t care about this video.

It might have been better to skip this video because it’s got such a narrow audience, but since that ship has sailed, let’s take a crack at some other ways they could write this title.

“This Is The Best City In America For Working Class People”

“This American City Just Changed Work-Life Balance Forever”

“You Get Guaranteed Vacation Days If You Live In This City”

These titles add some curiosity and appeal to a larger audience.

Alright, that wraps up this week’s Creator Hooks!
