One Dress To Rule Them All
Title: THE ONLY DRESS YOU NEED TO OWN | Nikol Johnson
Formula: The Only (Object) You Need To Own
Hook score: +386
Why this works:
Desire – This creator’s audience loves dresses.
Curiosity – “The Only Dress” builds curiosity two ways: 1) It makes you wonder what the dress is and 2) The constraint of just 1 dress you need to own makes for a more interesting story.
How you can use this hook: Tell your audience about the only object in a category they need to own.

Earth 2.0
Title: TESS Telescope Found New Planets Better than Earth!
Formula: (Authority) (Activity) New (Entities) Better than (Current Best Entity)!

Why this works:
Timeliness – This title feels like news and people love news.
Curiosity – It’s counterintuitive that there are any planets better than Earth, so that build curiosity.
How you can use this hook: Tell your audience about something recently discovered that’s better than the current best.

The Easiest Way To Spy On Your Competitors
Two of my favorite tools for spying on my competitors:

2) vidIQ’s Competitor Dashboard
Their trending tool lets you see what videos are getting views on a channel right now (this is an awesome alternative to just sorting a channel’s videos by most popular, which may show old videos that aren’t getting views anymore).

Excellent AI Tips
Title: 10X Your Excel Skills with ChatGPT 🚀
Formula: 10X Your (Product or Niche) Skills with ChatGPT 🚀
Hook score: +760
Why this works:
Desire – This creator’s audience wants to 10X their Excel skills.
Timeliness – ChatGPT is trending like crazy right now, so this title rides that wave.
How you can use this hook: Tell your audience how they can 10X their skills with ChatGPT

Overpriced Oranges
Title: What $100 Buys at the World’s Most Expensive GROCERY STORE

Why this works:
Curiosity – This title starts a story, but doesn’t finish it, so you need to click and watch the video. Also, “World’s Most Expensive Grocery Store” builds curiosity because it’s extreme.
How you can use this hook: Tell your audience what $100 buys at the most expensive version of the place they shop.

Walkin Into Skinniness

Why this works:
Daily Tips – People love hearing about things you can do or have done every day.
Time Frame – Time frames make videos more tangible and there are two in the thumbnail: one hour and 30 days.
Curiosity – This title makes you want to see his results.
Desire – This creator’s audience wants to lose fat.
How you can use this hook: Do an activity every day for 30 days and share your results.
Examples of this hook in action:

Flop of the Week
Title: How to Record Multiple USB Mics at Once
Hook score: -95
Why this flopped: It’s tough to say this video “flopped” because it’s probably meant to rank in search, and therefore is not expected to get many views right away.
That being said, I have a few thoughts on this.
First, always keep in mind the potential audience size when you’re making a video and make sure it’s worth it for you.
In this case, would it make more sense for this creator to spend his time making another video about 10Xing your skills with ChatGPT (see his video above) than a video about recording with multiple mics? Maybe.
Second, this title could be spiced up a bit.
He could refute an objection (“How to Record Multiple USB Mics at Once without ___”), call out beginners (“How to Record Multiple USB Mics at Once for Beginners”) or used the current year to let the audience know its about what’s working right now (“How to Record Multiple USB Mics at Once in 2023″).
