I’ve asked some of the best creators on YouTube, “How do you write such great titles?”
And they’ve all said the same thing: “I just model what works.”
So this email will show you 5 videos worth modeling to help you write great titles and save time.

Retirement Warning
Title: Don’t Retire Until You Hit These 5 Goals
Framework: Don’t (Activity) Until You Hit These 5 Goals
Hook score: +313
Why this works:
Warning – Warnings like this do a great job of grabbing the audience’s attention.
Curiosity – This opens a loop and makes you want to know what these goals are.
List – The list of 5 goals adds to the curiosity and makes this video more tangible.
How you can use this framework: Tell your audience to not do something they want to do until they’ve hit some goals.
Examples of this framework in action:
- Don’t Buy A House In Nashville Until You’ve Checked These 3 Things
- Don’t Hire a Lawyer Until You’ve Asked These 5 Questions
French Fundamentals
Title: What actually WORKED to Learn FRENCH (No Apps, No Hacks)

Hook score: +368
Why this works:
Desire – This creator’s audience would love to know what will actually work to help them learn French.
Curiosity – This opens a loop and makes you wonder what it is that actually worked.
Refute Objection – Many people who’ve tried to learn French are sick of apps and hacks, so this title refutes that objection with, “(No Apps, No Hacks).”
How you can use this framework: Tell your audience what will actually work to help them achieve a goal without the things they don’t want.
Examples of this framework in action:

Why this works:
Desire – This lists out two benefits:
- 70g of Protein
- Tastes like a cheat meal
Curiosity – By not mentioning what the meal actually is, it opens a loop and makes you want to click even more.
How you can use this framework: Tell your audience about something that has a few benefits, but don’t specify what it is.
Examples of this framework in action:
- This Flight Hack Saves $800 Per Trip and Feels Like Cheating the System
- This Foundation Has SPF 50 and Looks Like Your Natural Skin
Toxic Types
Title: God’s Warning: 7 Types of People You Must Not Help
Framework: (Authority Figure’s) Warning: 7 Types of (Entities) You Must Not (Activity)
Hook score: +619
Why this works:
Authority – Dropping in an authority figure in the beginning lends credibility to your video.
List – Lists make videos feel more tangible (you know exactly what the video will be about) and they add some curiosity.
Negativity – This leverages negativity in two different ways:
- It’s a warning
- It’s about people you should not help
How you can use this framework: Give your audience a warning about things they should not do.
Examples of this framework in action:
- Warren Buffett’s Warning: 7 Types of Stocks You Must Not Buy
- Mayo Clinic Warning: 7 Sick Symptoms You Must Not Ignore
Bored Blessing
Title: You Need to Be Bored. Here’s Why.
Framework: You Need to Be (Bad state or action). Here’s Why.
Hook score: +2782
Why this works:
Curiosity – Counterintuitive statements like this do a great job of building curiosity and getting people to click.
How you can use this framework: Tell your audience that they need to be or do something they don’t necessarily want to do.
Examples of this framework in action:
- You Need to Argue With Your Spouse. Here’s Why.
- You Need to Listen to Bad Music. Here’s Why.
Flop of the Week
Title: This Can Make or Break Your Retirement
Hook score: -87
Why this flopped: The wording in this title is a little weak.
It’s a cliche, it doesn’t take a side, and there’s no strong opinion. I think it might’ve done better if it were about either making retirement or breaking retirement, but not “make or break.” Here are some examples of what I mean:
Making retirement:
“5 Things That Will Make Retirement EASY”
“99% Of People Don’t Know The Secret To A Great Retirement”
Breaking retirement:
“5 Things That Will Ruin Your Retirement”
“99% Of People Are Accidentally Making This Retirement Mistake”
These two sets of titles take a bolder stance and avoid clichés.
