5 things the YouTube Algorithm hates and wish you’d stop doing

I’ve asked some of the best creators on YouTube, “How do you write such great titles?”

And they’ve all said the same thing: “I just model what works.”

So this email will show you 5 videos worth modeling to help you write great titles and save time.

P.S. If you want to save more time and use a title generator that uses all the titles from this newsletter, check out Creator Hooks Pro.

Plant Feelings

never rotate

Title: 15 Things Plants Hate and Wish You’d Stop Doing

Framework: 15 Things (Entities) Hate and Wish You’d Stop Doing

Hook score: +694

Why this works:

List – Lists make videos feel more tangible (you know exactly what the video will be about), and they add some curiosity.

Negativity – Nobody wants to mess up their plants, and this title leverages that feeling.

How you can use this framework: Tell your audience about things that something you have or take care of hates and wish you’d stop doing.

Examples of this framework in action:

  • 10 Things Your Car Hates and Wish You’d Stop Doing
  • 10 Things Your Immune System Hates and Wish You’d Stop Doing

Terrible Tragedies

Title: The Most Devastating Tragedies in History Explained

Framework: The Most Devastating (Entities) in History Explained

Hook score: +1084

Why this works:

Epic & Extreme – “Most Devastating” (extreme) and “in History” (epic) make this video feel more interesting and exciting.

Negativity – People love drama like this.

How you can use this framework: Tell your audience about the most devastating things in history in your niche.

Examples of this framework in action:

  • The Most Devastating NFL Upsets in History
  • The Most Devastating Weapons in History Explained

PGA Perks

15 perks for the champ

Title: Every INSANE Perk a Masters Champion Gets Explained in 18 Minutes!

Framework: Every INSANE (Benefits for an entity) Explained in (Video length)!

Hook score: +1948

Why this works:

Epic – “INSANE” makes this video feel epic, and “Every” makes it feel complete, comprehensive, and kinda adds to the epicness.

Time frame – The time frame of “in 18 Minutes” sets expectations and makes this video feel more tangible and interesting.

How you can use this framework: Tell your audience about every insane, cool perk or benefit of something.

Examples of this framework in action:

  • Every INSANE Benefit of Eating Cucumbers Daily Explained in 9 Minutes!
  • Every INSANE Perk of Living in Orlando Explained in 18 Minutes!

Bible is Better

this freed me

Title: The Bible Taught Me How to Manage My Time Better Than Any Self-Help Book

Framework: The (Unexpected, but desirable source) Taught Me How to (Achieve goal) Better Than Any (Expected source)

Hook score: +5775

Why this works:

Desire – This creator’s audience would love to manage their time better. They also love that these tips are from the bible.

Curiosity – Since the bible isn’t necessarily meant to help you manage your time, this title is a little surprising and counterintuitive.

How you can use this framework: Tell your audience how something they like taught them to do something they’re trying to do better than the expected ways you’d learn to do that thing.

Examples of this framework in action:

  • The Bible Taught Me How to Have a Great Marriage Better Than Any Therapist
  • MrBeast videos taught me how to sell better than any sales guru

Mastering the Mind

habits that increase IQ

Title: This Is How Geniuses Train Their Mind — IQ Is Not Fixed

Framework: This Is How (Authority figures achieve a goal) — (Refute objection)

Hook score: +6739

Why this works:

Desire – This creator’s audience would love to get smarter.

Authority – This is about how “Geniuses” train their minds, not just any old person. This is also supported in the thumbnail with Einstein, Isaac Newton, and Gandalf.

Refute objection – Many people think their IQ is fixed, but the end of this title refutes that objection.

Specificity – This title feels a bit more believable and exciting because it’s so specific. “This Is How Geniuses Get Smart” doens’t have as much punch.

How you can use this framework: Tell your audience how the best in your field achieve a goal, and refute the objection that their baseline state cannot be changed.

Examples of this framework in action:

  • This Is How 80-Year-Olds Stay Fit — Aging Is Not The Cause of Joint Pain
  • This Is How Old Money Got So Rich — You Don’t Have To Follow Society’s Rules

Flop of the Week

why your brain refuses to learn

Title: Why You Can’t Learn the Way You Think | The Fast Learning Formula

Hook score: -97

Why this flopped: This formula, “Why You Can’t [Activity] the Way You Think” is only effective if everybody has strong opinions about the right way to do the activity.

My theory for why this flopped is that I don’t think everybody has strong opinions about the right way to learn (or at least, not strong enough to be intrigued by this title).

However, I do think everybody wants to learn fast, so instead of sticking that at the end, we could lead with it:

“The Fastest Way To Learn Anything You Want (According to Science)”

We could also use curiosity by adding some contrast (easy vs. hard):

“The Easiest Way to Learn Hard Skills (Explained In 3 Minutes)”
